Skip the full face application

You may have applied your foundation the same way for years however, the most flattening complexion, no matter your age, will always be a lightweight base perfectly matched to your skin tone with a youthful glow to create a softer look and minimise makeup (particularly matte, full-coverage formulas) slipping into fine lines and wrinkles.

And as always, drinking lots of water helps with keeping your skin in top condition too.

The same goes for concealer, thick and heavy applications underneath the eye area tend to fall into lines and aging skin. Jane Iredale Enlighten Plus Concealer SPF 30 is a great alternative; offering a more youthful look but still providing coverage where you want it.

Keep your concealer application to a minimum too. Don't go too thick and apply only to the inner corners of the eye and towards the outer corner blending the product up to the end of your eyebrow then joining together for instant brightness and lift.

No apples of your cheeks

The traditional application of smiling widely and then applying blusher right on the apples of your cheeks is now slightly outdated.

Blusher placement is so important and the easiest way to prove this is to apply your favourite blusher two different ways on your own face to see the improvement for yourself. Apply your blusher as you usually would on one side then, on the other cheek apply that same blusher but slightly higher, like a highlighter, bringing it all the way up to your temples and blend outwards with a brush. Notice the instant natural lift!

If you haven't tried them already, a cream blush is great to experiment with as they are much more moisturising than a powder and minimise showing up wrinkles. We recommend Jane Iredale Glow Time Blush and find that shade Mist is a warm pink that suits everyone.

Go easy on the bronzer

Go easy on the bronzer and opt for a light hand when applying instead. This is because bronzers tend to be entirely matte formulas and we want to draw attention to a healthy, youthful glow on the skin instead.

When applying; take a tapered brush or alternatively pinch a large fluffy brush, always blend upwards, and always keep the shape as high as possible. As a rule, take your brush (delilah Large Powder Brush) and hold it diagonally against the top of your ear. You should be able to press and feel underneath your cheekbone, this area is the very lowest that your bronzer should ever fall below. A bronzer we love is Jane Iredale Peaches & Cream, the palette of different shades creates a super easy to wear and versatile look plus the packaging is fully sustainable too!

Elongate the eyes

Not only can you lift the appearance of your face, but you can also do the same with the eyes.

As we get older, the eyes are one of the first areas on the skin to show a sign of ageing. You may experience drooping of the eyelids so your eyeshadow is no longer as visible as it once was, eyelashes which are more sparse than they used to be, and added darkness around the once bright undereye. However, there are many tips and tricks to counteract these issues.

Firstly, an eyelash growth serum is a must for everyone, especially if you are experiencing sparse and short lashes. We approve of Swiss Clinic Eyelash Growth Serum which stimulates hair growth and helps to fill in any gaps.

curler

Next, purchase an eyelash curler and always carefully curl your lashes before every mascara application. This will make all the difference to ensure that any short, fair, or straight lashes are picked up and eyes look wide & awake. Next, experiment with only using mascara on the upper lashes and eyeliner on the top lash line instead to instantly open up the eye area. Applying makeup all around the eye closes the area up and takes away a more youthful appearance.
