The Best Blusher For Your Skin Tone

MAKEUP

Everyone has a makeup product that you won't leave home without; a popular one is definitely blusher. If you're a regular blusher wearer then you’ll know the difference a sweep of colour can make, and adding a hint of colour to the apples of your cheeks can keep you looking fresh-faced all day long. However, all too often blush is overlooked; many women simply use the first pink shade they can find or a colour that they have worn since they were a teenager, naturally repurchased it time and time again but back then it was only chosen because everyone else wore it!

The truth is, like all other makeup, there is an art to choosing the best blusher shade for your skin tone, and our makeup experts have the knowledge on how to choose the best blusher colour for you. A great place to start is by dividing it up by fair, medium and dark skin tones.

Recognising your undertone in natural daylight is key here. Do you have warmer undertones that are yellow or golden? Or maybe a cool undertone, that contains more pink or blue tones? Take a look at the veins on your wrist - if they are green, chances are that you're warm-toned. If they’re blue, then you’re cool-toned. If you are still none the wiser or you have traits of both, you’re most likely neutral.

Also, placement is so, so important when applying blusher and can often make or break a look. Avoid placing the blusher directly onto your cheeks straight out of the pan as this will cause way too much pigment to be applied. Instead, tap the brush onto somewhere like the back of your hand first and this will disperse any loose product and then begin to apply using gentle sweeping motions. Next, avoid applying the blusher too low as this can drag the face down and make you appear older. Alternatively, smile to find the apple of your cheeks and sweep upwards towards the temples. This will create the illusion of a lifting effect. We naturally flush around our nose area so this is an area to keep clear of blush too. An index finger-sized gap is enough.

Fair skin tones

BLUSH

Here, unless it is your preference, you want to avoid using a colour that is too deep and dark against your complexion. A great option for those with cool to neutral undertones is a soft pink such as Jane Iredale Pure Pressed Blush – Barely Rose (pictured) which offers a hint of pink without looking too striking. Whereas, if you have a warm undertone or want more of a pop of colour on the cheeks then opt for a peachy coral-like Jane Iredale Pure Pressed Blush – Whisper.

Medium skin tones

 BERRY

If you have a typical medium skin tone with a neutral undertone then try a lovely, warm mauve pink such as Colorescience Sunforgettable Total Protection Colour Balm – Berry (pictured) as these never fail to compliment. The balm is a creamy formula in a stick format which you easily apply directly onto the cheeks and blend into the skin using either clean fingertips or a dense make-up brush then you’re good to go. Again, if you have warm, golden undertones then opt for a warm, coral colour like Colour Balm - Bronze instead. The opposite recommendations apply if you want a pop of colour.

SHEER HONEY

Women of colour look beautiful in a variety of colours such as vibrant fuchsia, berry, raisin and plum. Avoid anything too light as it may appear ashy on the skin or even not show up at all. Those with cooler undertones should choose the fuchsia, berry colours like Colorescience Sunforgettable Total Protection Colour Balm – Berry whereas for the warm, golden ladies we would recommend and love using Jane Iredale Pure Pressed Blush – Sheer Honey (pictured) which adds warmth to the complexion too. Again, as before, opposites apply.
